It only takes a few-minute-drive in our minivan between Biarritz and Bayonne before you immerse into the charms of this picturesque city, pefect to visit on foot. Discover a city full of treasures and secret corners. The first step is the pedestrian part of the city center called Grand Bayonne, just next to Sainte-Marie Cathedral and the cloister. Round the corner, you will meet face to face with the best Bayonne ham producer! Taste an unparalled ham together with some sheep cheese and enjoy the passion and know-how of the region’s best producer. The second step is right under the arches. Where you will get to meet the best artisan chocolate-maker in town. The owners of the place will offer you to taste different kinds of chocolate: some dark, some bitter, some with high cocoa content...
He will even bring you on top of the city walls from where you will get a wonderful view of the traditional red and green half-timbered houses lined up along the Nive River banks.
Now, cross the Nive - one of the two rivers that go through Bayonne - and stroll along the narrow picturesque streets that will take you to our 3rd fun and tasty stop in the district called Petit Bayonne. You are now facing Trinquet Saint André. A special place in all the townspeople's hearts, this trinquet is the oldest Pelota court in France. Feel like a true local! You may get a chance to watch a game in progress...or even better: learn how to play Pelota with your guide!
Along the way, in between these deligthfull stops at local producers, you will walk around with your guide and learn about the city of Bayonne and its history.
Time to enjoy a nice tasty break for a lunch made of good typical Basque terroir products.
Off to Saint-Jean-de-Luz now, the corsairs’ town, for a journey into history and local gastronomy. Take a good look at the main square, Place Louis XIV, and the elegant Spanish infante’s mansion where King Louis XIV stayed for his wedding. Then take a stroll around typical charming narrow alleys, before a nice stopover and gourmet break, where you will meet one of the best producers of the region and enjoy Basque food specialties.
Take a rest and enjoy a tasty local lunch with only local-made products. (Lunch not included, on request)
Off to Biarritz now, for a unique visit of this imperial town! Your guide will share his passion for the “Queen of the beaches and the beach of Kings”. Walk through the town, its beaches, discover its most stylish villas which still show Biarritz’s prestigious past. Learn more about the glamourous side of the city: The casino and Hotel du Palais, the Palace overlooking the ocean. It was built based on Villa Eugénie, the summer residence that Napoleon III built for the Empress.
Climb to the iconic lighthouse that marks the limit between Landes sandy beaches and Basque rocky coast.
Take a stroll around the picturesque Fishermen’s Harbour (Port des pêcheurs), The Virgin on the Rock (Rocher de la Vierge), and Port Vieux, the Old Harbour. Feel the unique atmosphere of the town, wandering around its many charming little streets. For a perfect ending, enjoy a typical aperitif: a delicious local Basque drink in a unique, mythic and majestic setting.
